Small business owners are not exactly overflowing with optimism these days. That’s the news out of the Washington-based National Federation of Independent Business, which this week reported yet another decline in its Small Business Optimism Index.

Still, most of the home-based business owners and sole proprietors I know are hanging tough. We self-employed tend to be a resilient bunch.

Resilience, I learned this spring, is actually a core competency in business. An individual’s level of resilience has been said to be more important than education, experience or training in determining whether he or she succeeds or fails.

It’s no surprise then that resilience is often the focus of employee training and development programs, especially in stressful times like these.
