Little Cupcake Bakeshop has gone all-out to go green, from investing in energy-efficient refrigerators to buying wind power from Consolidated Edison. The Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, shop’s customers like its efforts to stay carbon neutral—but attracting patrons who appreciate the “Global Warming Cupcake”isn’t the only benefit. Saving energy also helps the bakery stay profitable, says co-owner Massimo LoBuglio. “It’s a big boost to business,” he says.
Little Cupcake Bakeshop began its push for energy efficiency when it opened in an existing, mixed-use building in 2005, making changes gradually. “As a small business owner, you’re always looking for efficiencies,” says Mr. LoBuglio, who has a background as an environment activist.
